Pixel Art / Re: Detailing flower patch on flat-shaded background
« on: April 18, 2020, 08:43:29 am »
Oh boy, do you really want to do something this size using pixel art?

That's a decent job on the trees so far.

The flower patch looks pretty good to me so far. Add some flower heads here and there. Like blotches of white or whatever the color is. I see you have a few, but those look like sparkles. You need something that looks like  a flower at an angle.

For something like armor, keep in mind it's highly reflective and you should see a reflection from that cape as well as light from your light source. Your sprite looks pretty good, but the lighting is weak, as you probably know.

Pixel Art / Re: My first pixel fanart (and pixel artwork)

Needs better lighting / shadows. It's pretty good for a first pixel art. I'd argue it needs more colors but maybe that's the pokemon style.

Hi, I'm a pixel artist, digital artist and programmer. I'm looking to get back into doing some freelance work after 3+ years of programming iphone games. I can do pixel art, painted digital art and photoshop work. I'm open for both long term and short term projects.

Best way to contact me is by e-mail: chris_6713@yahoo.com

General Discussion / MazeQuest 2 Released

So this is what I've been working ( slaving ) on for the past year or so. MazeQuest 2 is basically a remade version of MazeQuest 1. Whole new engine built in unity. Now has tactical combat similar to shining force rather than the basic static combat of MazeQuest 1.

The graphics were made using a variety of techniques, including clever photoshop effect manipulation. Nothing was straight pixel art though, but still it looks pretty clean. I hope someone enjoys the game, and don't forget to leave feedback of some kind!

I'd say pixel art will always have a place as a style of art, but it is completely obsolete as a necessary skill for making computer art. The place where it had some resurgent use was once mobile phone applications, but the standard resolution on today's mobile phones now far exceeds the size where one needs to consider individual pixel efficiency.

For example, the game I am making ( remaking actually ) for both mobile phones and the PC uses a resolution of 1136 x 640, which is well below what my target platforms are capable of, and still I am making all of my art via painting and photoshop layer effects, no pixel art at all, and it looks quite good ( if I do say so myself ).

But still there are quite a few retro-style games out there making use of pixel art, as a niche style I think it will survive.

Commercial with in-game play + links below:

If you liked the 16 bit SNES RPG's you will likely enjoy this game. All the art was done by myself, as well as the programming.

Hope you guys enjoy!
