Pixel Art / Thoughts on small anime heads for sprites?
« on: December 03, 2015, 01:21:59 am »
Hopefully this is in the right place and all... anyway:

Does anyone have any thoughts on anime faces and hair regarding a character of this size?
This is the current format I have. Could anyone show me examples or edits that could look better?
Any examples are welcome (if it fits the body size, it is a useful example!), especially examples that
show how normal anime eyes might look (with eye color and without red markings/outlines).
Thanks in advanced.

Current head with body:

Thank you, I'll keep that all that advice in mind!
I have been working mostly on other things, so I will probably come back to this (as suggested) when I have more properties of the scene developed.
Thoughts are always welcome, but I will probably not post an edit for a decent amount of time.

Here is an updated version based on Decroded's edit:

Thoughts anyone?
Also, thank you very much once again for the edits everyone, I've learned a lot!

WOW! That rock is amazing!
I'll definitely learn a lot from that example, thank you so much! :y:

Also, what was the third picture titled "progress"?
It says the image you requested does not exist or is no longer available.

It may be a while, but I will eventually post an updated version of the island.

It's coming to Android as well! :)

Great! I'll look into it once it is released! (Keep up the great work!)

The shape of this island is supposed to be like a man-carved shape; cut intentionally. I like sharp, square-ish edges on the island rock. The rock is supposed to be canyon rock, like the grand canyon or any other red or orange rock. The island itself is held together by a device from within, so a shape that would naturally hold together is not desired.

Does that help clear things up a bit? :)

Thanks for the advice... I've noticed it seems to be lacking depth, but I am somewhat inexperienced at creating depth.
I've been messing around with different desaturated light forms, but have not gotten a look for the island good enough to post an update.
Any examples form experienced artists are appreciated.

Thanks for the quick edit. It does give me some ideas on some better shading! ;D
I think I'll probably stick with the unnatural shape however, it's part of the story.
I'll continue updating as the island gets better! (Thanks to all the great advice this place has to offer!)

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] [C+C] SNES Platformer Game Tiles

I don't know much about SNES restriuctions, but from here it looks like the lowest colour video mode has 96, and then that's where you need multiple parallax layers.

I really don't see any value in using DB32 if you are trying to capture a SNES-like aesthetic. SNES games typically have quite vibrant colours and relatively high colour counts. Neither of which DB32 really provides.

I would have to agree with surt. The palette seems to make your art look more like a high-res nes game more so than a snes game. Have you considered making your own palette? The main thing your tiles seem to be missing is a variety in color.
