Ok I think your help gave me just the idea to get started with!
As for the shape, I did draw the basis on paper... here is what it looked like before I started spriting it.

After your last post I tried to copy just the style to figure out how it works without outlining though i looks very nice. I have to say it now looks better... (though it is only style copy - shame on me)

EDIT:
So I experimented a bit and I think it goes into the right direction:

Thanks for advice... this seems far more like a real golem
Think I also have to say goodbye to the thinking of black outlines...

What I now would really appreciate if you could tell me (or just state out) the steps I should take to get such shapes.. Do you start with a basic color and then just add shading and lighting? or do you do everything in the same step? I think knowing the procedure would allow me to understand more of pixel arts itself and to develop...

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the reference... But seems that I failed to apply it to my sprite...
I worked on the segmented body part... So feel free to criticize me..

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#198 - Stone Golem - Form, Shading
« on: July 08, 2014, 01:09:16 pm »
After a long time I made a pixel art... (as long as you can call it "art")
I tried to create a golem made of stone. However I am absolutely not satisfied with the shading. I looked at many references for stone shadings but I can't get it to apply to my work.

Goal is to have the golem be split up into its segments, so I can later just position them as I need to.

Any suggestions and critique is welcome.

So now I resized my sprite to 256x192 and this is what it looks like now:

For now I neglected shadows and focused on the outlines. What do you think about it? Criticism wlcome.

Here is a current screenshot of the gameplay.
But keep in mind that I will replace most of the current sprites and the snake will be green. I resized the screen resolution to 800x600, so I think i will make the other sprites smaller as well.
Here you go

Because some traps are missing in this screen, here are two of the missin traps:

Hey thanks for your suggestions.
Since my game is running in 1024x768 resolution I thought it would be better to have a large title screen. So which size woul you recommend? At the moment i try to sharpen the lines in half the size with 400x300.

Pixel Art / Game Title [C+C][Need help]

Hey everyone,
I am currently working on a snake-based game. Now it is at a state where I have to add some art (e.g. Title Screen). Now I tried to do some stuff, but i can't get it to my pleasure.
Personally I want to have my snake wriggling around some traps. Two of these traps are spinning around their center, but I have no idea how to imply this "spinning effect".
This is what I have so far.

I know the snake doesn't look very well, but it isn't finished yet. The wall and the snake should be a template for now and just give a rough idea while i am stuck with the 2 traps on the right. Any suggestions to improve my title screen?

Bottom right should be the menu when finished, so it should stay blank.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Space Ships
« on: August 11, 2012, 08:54:05 pm »
First i have to say, the star wars ship was originally my reference for the hunter ship. But then i decided to reconsider and so i came up with the spider shape.
The bad shadowing and detailing of my last one is because i thought "hey til now you have improved a lot. Now your ships seems to be very small, lets make a veeery huge one".. Now this is the problem. I didnt really thought about where and how to place the details anymore, but I mainly wanted to create something big.. dont ask me why. Today I realized it isnt the size of a ship that makes it look great and even the gameplay can be very confusing with such big ships. So now i will try to stay small to first enhance my skills until i am ready to grow in size.

The fact that my last silhouette didnt really look exactly like my reference was on purpose. I first had something like you posted (of course not as good), but then i wanted to go ahead to create something own into this silhouette. And like i already said, i was really satisfied. My ships must not look organic. But your suggestion with asymetric ships... i think i will give it a shot

@grimsane:
the shape was intended to look like this. I used this as a reference in a more extreme way.
Reference

But i must admit the shading was failed. I tried to use the same technique as with the other ones, but as you can see.. it didnt work quite well. and to be honest, i dont like the tentacle ship^^" sure it looks very well shaded, but i prefer my version of shape, though it was really hard to shade because of the big areas.

@jams:
the ships dont have to look too 3-dimensional. This level of flatness is a characteristic trait of  the game to make it look more suitable for the gameplay ;) and yeah its really tough to shade with the lightsource behind the viewer... and the fact that im a newby doesnt make it easier :D
