Pixel Art / Re: Nes Mockup Grass Borders

I liked the original cliffs better. The new ones look too rough, and not a rock kind of rough, a low resolution kind of rough.

This reminds me of Golden Sun, except NES. Quite a feat.

I remember this project! Good to see that it's still alive.

There's some awesome perspective in your scenes, but 'Above the Street' is bothering me. Her face looks a lot bigger/wider compared to her hair than in the other shots, but that could just be because her hair's swept back.

And also I forget who mentioned it previously but Ghost in the Shell DOES have a lot of gratuitous female athletics scenes that may be good to learn from. XD

Thanks for the long replies, guys. I want to note a couple things though:

The house is directly ripped from Zelda, until I get a replacement graphic. I wasn't happy with any of my attempts at a proper tower.

The rocks...well. The rocks have been changed so many times now, and I absolutely loathe trying to draw edge tiles (they're something of a weakness of mine). They looked like this before - much too warm, but a little more interesting. Should I try something like this for the edges?

As for the character, yeah, he's pretty unnoticeable down there. It might be a size issue, but I'm reluctant to depart from that comical 16x16 squashed look.

I'm gonna be doing a beach scene and a bong tower (you'll see) next, so keep your eyes peeled. ;)

General Discussion / Re: Choosing colors and pallettes

I'm really unorthodox with color. If this shade of brown looks good next to that shade of green, I'm putting it there.

Man, I should learn me some color theory. :/

Pixel Art / Gameboy color-style mockup

I don't know how closely I'm following gameboy color restrictions, but I stole colors (and the stacked house) from the Oracle Zelda games and made 8x8 tiles (which have mostly been grouped into 16x16 patterns). Also, I got lazy with the trees and rocks and threw in transparency. As long as it has the mood of a gameboy color game I'm happy. :) It was originally a four-shades-of-gray gameboy game until I decided that it looked, on the whole, a bit boring.

C+C away.

Really bold and striking, excellent. Your trees and rocks are great.

What CaKsTeR said about the waves is true, and also, the grass is bugging me. It looks TOO bubbly for my tastes, but I guess you can pass it as a style point, because the rest of the graphics are also pretty round and full.

The first thing that came to mind is 'penis'. I don't know if that's what you're going for but I thought it was worth mentioning. :P

In general, the pallet is really boring, like you just slid the brightness up and down on MSPaint. Play with different hues, try to eliminate a color or two. Adam otherwise had good advice, just keep working at it. :y:

The current piece is better than Joseph's boob warrior (sorry, that's just what he looks like in your edit :P ) - skin highlights need to be very light so that the character doesn't look wet or greased up and I think you'll find that most pixel artists define skin by shadow. Also, a head-on perspective can work, definitely, but it's less dynamic. Stylistically I like Atnas's current sprite more, I say keep it, it's much better than the old ones.

To be nitpicky on the birdman, the side view should probably have the beak slightly lower and a tiny bit more of the top of the head because it's inconsistent with the front view's perspective right now. Great job otherwise, I love the background tiles.

These are absolutely incredible. The beach scene is rather oversaturated, though, and it took me a moment to find the goblin in the forest scene. I was reading it as a plant.
