Title: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: Scuba Steve on January 01, 2006, 09:45:50 pm
King of Spriters 2006: Cellout (http://action.mancubus.net/aquarium/kos2006.html)

Some may remember the old King of Spriters (http://action.mancubus.net/aquarium/kos2003.html) we did many years ago.  It was a lot of fun and really brought a bunch of prominent figures out... even got Sals to work in sizes larger then 32x32!

I have some time off and I decided to start a new version for 2006 because one, this was always fun and two, I run the risk of new members not knowing I actually draw from time to time :P I've decided to try something new this time to really make people work... this time you must include a character sprite (animated or not, I don't give a crap) in your own style... but to scale of a capcom or SNK figure.  When you finish both parts, portrait and Sprite, edit your initial post to display both of them side by side create a new post with both of them side by side.

Obviously I won't ask anyone to participate unless I start us off.  Some of you might remember my old 2003 (jesus has it been that long) fighter figure of myself...

So I decided to update it...

(http://www.doomworld.com/gbd2/misc/scuba2k6av.png) (http://www.doomworld.com/gbd2/misc/scuba2k6anim.gif)

The colours are meh, the contrast is just OK and the pose didn't come out as intended and I didn't match the Cacpcom style quite like I wanted... but whatever... critique it if you want, I may or may not fiddle with it some more.  Also the finger were a pain.  The portrait came out a bit better... hopefully very reminiscent of the new SNK style... I tried to emulate it...

Most importantly, I must remind everyone... NOT EVERY ENTRY WILL BE ADDED TO THE FINAL SCREEN.  I can't stress that enough, there simply isn't enough space if everyone participates.  I make my judgement calls based off quality, so put some time into your work.  Only one person is guaranteed a slot, me, hahaha.  There is no real restriction on size as this is as free and open as possible.  No colour limits, and sizes can be anything reasonable from a Sukura sized character to the Incredibe hulk from Marvel vs Capcom.

So to Recap...

- Portrait
- Sprite
- [Optional] Website you want linked to... completely up to you, as I will add any without this.
- [Optional] Stage Background if you are interested in a custom one... again completely up to you, as I will add any without this.

Hey, is it possible I could submit a fighter sprite I did last year and sort of skip this part and then just do the character portrait later on.  I'd just like to contribute to this but haven't got the time to start a fighter from scratch and was intending do a portrait of my old one anyways.

Good times ahoy, I haven't worked on a fighter since I first started pixeling.

Well I gave it a lil touch up and changed colors slightly as I wasn't totally satisfied when I did them last year.  Will the thing support alternate palettes for characters?  Supplied the ones I already had done just in case.

*pic removed*

I look forward to doing the portrait bit.

EDIT:  Latest versions on 2nd page of topic

It will probably be ongoing like the previous... as soon as I have about 10 really well done images, I'll put together the flash file and continually add people until it fills.

Can anyone tell me why all the character sheets of SNK v Capcom characters here http://www.confusticated.com/svc_frames.html have sprites of them as women?

if your character has accesories, can the overall image be alittle wider than a regular sprite? or is there a size limit you would like us to stick too?

and the final product:
not happy with where it was heading i had a look at kens sprite, and used his colours of his shirt and skin etc
also.. i basically stole his legs with a few minor edits.. not sure if thats allowed lol >_>
anyways, I happy with the outcome :)

not sure if I'll do a portrait.. i prolly will tho :P

yeah thatd be cool, since i have 2 characters. maybe when your at someones select with more than 1 character you can swap around the two.
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: Scuba Steve on January 03, 2006, 03:03:02 am
You can make more... but I'll only use one for now.  When things start to slow down, if there are any open space I'll fill them with second entires to fill the whole thing up.  I'm not sure how many people will submit stuff, this is kindof touch and go.

I'll look into Cycling... but I'd rather have everything on one central main screen.  If you want me to use a different sprite and portrait than already listed, let me and I'll swap them for the time being.

St0ven: Why am I under the impression that you're not actually that rugged looking?

M Bison: That's a decent picture, but could you go for something a bit more original?  I don't feel like adding a pre existing fighting character.

Schu: Something about the simplicity of that drawing and the shading just sucks me in.

Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: Helm on January 04, 2006, 11:11:02 am
Yeah I'm in. I'll fire up pro motion right now and see how it goes.

EDIT:

heh, really didn't feel like going for another 'jeans and t-shirt' theme, so since I was listening to the Fields of the Nephilim, I decided I might as well go for a western outfit. KOF games are outrageous enough so that something like this might fly. Obviously western helm knows no actual martial arts hence the unguarded gunslinger stance. But no guns. He stands no chance!

technically wise, this deviates a lot from more proper KOF or Capcom styles, as there's dithering, an alternate lightsource and a very unified palette ( there's no way this can be palette-cycled in case two players wanted to play the same character, for example) but a little bit of variety will make the final selection more interesting I think.

Portrait later.

EDIT 2:

I wanted to critique as well, so here we go.

Scuba: new one much, much better than the last one. The last one has no proper center of gravity at all, he would fall over. The animation, although afterthought-ish, is inventive, nice usage of the scarf, and yeah, the fingers are a pain but you did a very good job. Nice, vibrant colours fit the mood of this type of thing fine.

Portrait's not as good. The left arm is severily short. T-shirt kinda plain in terms of interesting wrinkles, but I guess that's just a nitpick. I dig the pointing hand, but the wrist there doesn't connect right.

Captain Blood:

by the way, Captain Blood. There's copies of you all over the gallaxy, and they're after your vital fluids. You better go to their planets and kill them. Good luck with your mission.

As to the sprite, I've seen it before. dislike the heavy usage of black. It palette-shifts nicely enough, the more human-skin-toned one is my favourite version. You've invented a lot of muscle groups for this, but I guess that's sorta ok as well, depends on how realistic you want this to feel.

Acke:

Nice sprite in design, suffers from some issues. The pant folds and shading are too random, I think. Both arms are a bit malformed and do not suggest a fighting pose as much as someone flailing their arms about after they've fallen asleep. Like the face detail, and the colour selection's ok, besides the pure grays you should basically just avoid.

TakaM:

the lower Ken-like pose does not sit well at all with the limp arms and general out-of-balance body above. NEVER rip stuff, even if it's just toes and cloth highlights as in this case. What you basically did with the body is rob out all the dynamicism of the pose by making the arms perfectly horisontial or vertical, in right angles, facing directly down or in front. Human bodies, especially bouncy martial arts stanced and whatever tend to be all odd-angles and covering space for defense or quick jabs. You're got your fighter basically doing the robot with the top of his body, while in a karate stance with the lower part. Doesn't work. Extra points for little big adventure reference, though. And the Portrait works quite well, especially considering you're 'breaking style' with the simplified Twinsen face.

Robert:

The sprite isn't done. AA outlines, clean up colours, highlits. Do more shading. Right now what you've got is closer to lineart than finished sprite.

Skalle:

Overal a nice piece. Sadly the cloth folds are really not working at all. All of them look random and 'draped'. They don't follow the body beneath them, and seem like connected cardboard pieces. Generally your sprite suffers from looking like a paper cut out doll. A clearer overhead lightsource and a reworking of all the folds might help the case. Face and hair look fine.

Ruyumaru:

jarring colour choice, blanket shading everywhere, impossible folds for cloth, anatomy issues, no understandable lightsource.

Scuba's second piece:

Nice pants, you're wasting the blue shade on the coat, too close to black right now. Generally a simple but effective sprite. I'd aa the little bit of facial hair there, but no biggie.

Silver:

do not mirror human beings. Also study anatomy, as you've got a very weak grasp of it. Why is your character wearing a scarf like scuba's. He doesn't in the portrait.

M Bison: what scuba said

Stoven:

this is it, more or less. Best entry so far, and by far. Study this here, everybody. No real crits besides the stray pixel on the piece of wood there. Excellent work, Stoven.

Splat: nice to see you do some small work for once. It's a simple but effective sprite, although the colour choice leaves a bit to be desired and I'm not sure if the pose would work in a game. Unless it's a mid-frame from some introduction movement or something.

ejay:

very, very good. The sprite suffers a bit from being top-heavy and out of balance, but the folds are nice. The pants could use a bit of reworking, though, especially the right (ours) leg. The colours are great, the portrait works very well. Simple KOF two shade-and-buffer folds, all correct. Going from the second shade to pure black might be too harsh, though.

Schu:

simple, but again, effective. Any way you cut it, I think the head's too small for those legs, though. Or maybe the legs should be toned down a bit. Folds could be worked more, but eh, matter of preference and style. Nice shoes.

Gazette:

Pants too large, and whereas you've got the KOF-type circular shading thing going on, you go from darkest to brightest very fast. Might go with a bit more gradient spacing. Personally prefer the green version.

Demented Hero:

I'd start with studying anatomy a lot. There's lots of errors and I don't think you'd benefit from tweaking this point-by-point.

Cold Mage:

Pretty nice animation, the straigthjacket could do with a lot more angles and folding, it's not made of fat rubber. Head too small for feet again, so I suppose this is following some Capcom unwritten rule about head-to-feet-ratio I haven't observed?

Kenneth:

simple style, underdetailed by my standards, but you know what you're doing, so I'll shut up on that end. I'm not uptight or anything but I think the panty shot is unwarranted in this case. It's an idle stance, save that for some sort of roundhouse kick I guess? Dig the little earth people a lot.

Crazy Asian Gamer:

Pick a brighter palette, shade, and study anatomy and the general fundamentals of drawing, really. There is more specific pixel art critique to be made but I'm not sure there's going to be much benefit from it.

As to the sprite, I've seen it before. dislike the heavy usage of black.

Then you're gonna hate the portrait.  It too uses a lot of black.  And I ain't changing that because I currently love using black and find it interesting to build the colors coming out of a sort of shadow and it suits the subject matter.  Plus I just got sick and tired of all the colored outline techniques and I grew tired of Capcom's style and never much liked SNK's at all, so I don't feel like copying them for this.  I do a lot of black and white sorta horror comic art these days and the sprite reflects that.

Ok I think I'm done.  Kept it to 16 colors just for practice.  Fastest pixel piece I've ever done in relation to size.  Sketched last night and pixelled today, which to those who know my usual work speed, is a miracle.  Anyways I'm pretty pleased with it.  Tried out some technique ideas I'd been wanting to try for a while.  Yeah it's a tad big so crop if it exceeds the max size.  I best get on with the contract work I'm late with now, eh.

Wasted how so?  I wasn't specifically trying to stick to a specific palette limit.  I could have snagged the dark blues fro his shirt but I kind of liked the dark blue jacket highlights, what would you have suggested?

Hmm, looking at my pic now I think the hand looks awkwardly positioned here.  On the pencil sketch ideas he has that arm pulled all the way back up and behind him and the other arm down diagonally and the long hair elbow spikes sorta formed an invisible diagonal line right through the picture.  Doesn't seem to work as well without the rest of the pic.

Ah well...  it'll do.
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: Helm on January 04, 2006, 11:23:32 pm
It's not about palette limit, it's that the dark blue is too dark, can't really make it out against the black, and therefore I would suggest you lightening it up just a tad.

The height of the shown background is 212... if you look at the flash it's basically a 212 x212 square that you'll see that is cut in half diagonally.  So I guess... any width... but know that only that much will show.

I'm working on a character for this:

the portrait I think I'm going to have to work on the outlining, but it's mostly done.  The small head next to it is the head I've done for my fighter sprite, I'm having a lot of trouble with the body because I haven't done much work with fighter sprites before.

Also, since this is my first post here, I'd just like to say hi.  I'm sure some of you remember me from other forums--I recognize TakaM, Helm, Peppermint Pig, and a few others on this forum from Pixelation, and TakaM I remember even further back at the old ZFGC forums back when zelda fangames were still around.  I'm trying to get back into the community after being away for a bit.

Void: I really love this but the one thing that irks me is the pattern on his pants' leg.  The pants bend and fold but the pattern does not, it just hovers over the folds.

Gil: Try some different things out then, just remember that eyes (on humans) are in the center of the face.

Bo: I think you may want to swap legs that are forward.  You drew a leg darker on purpose to indicate that it was in the foreground compared to the foreground leg... but I think they're mixed up.

Acke: The hair is really out of place as other mentioned... the rest of him is very natural and then his hair glows in the dark.  That looks linfe for the glowing machine stuff but not his hair.

reydragk: yeah, that will look much better removing the black lines.

Wow, I remember the first one I still have my half completed entry for it on my other computer hah. Great stuff so far too. I'd love to make an entry but I don't really have any idea's for a character so I guess to the sketching board it is.

Ro83rt- you have a nice improvement but the folds in the clothes could still use some work the darkest tone you have outlining the folds makes them look to rigid. Look at some of the sprites Camus posted or other snk, capcom stuff. Keep up the good work. (sent pm)

I tried to make the clothes flow from where they would be hanging.  His knees is pressing the front of the pantsso the cloths drag from there down.  I also added a bit of contrast to the pants because they were very soft.  I provided a shot that might help from Mark of the Wolf.

I've seen it all before.  The Capcom style stuff is great and, for me, actually is superior to their real work and designs.  About time somebody updated those aging old Darkstalkers sprites, especially Morrigan who's original sprite now looks embarrasing in the recent games they've put her in.  Just wish these were actually in the game.

Not so keen on his SNK stuff.  I know he's great at it, but I still find the SNK style ugly as hell.

Looking better, but the biggest problem is still (his) left leg.  It almsot seems too short.  I know it's supposed to be back... but if that's the case it should be much darker and smaller as well.  Right now it looks like he has one short leg and one long.

I think pants are too generic for this creature, but any type of clothing would be a nice accessory to flesh out the design more(its another naked alien)..
I personally picture some baggy balloon-like pants in a soft yellow-orange cream color.
the edit to the sword-arm looks way better than before.
would be interesting if his back arm was out from behind his body, it seems like its hidden

The pictures and portraits submitted or shown in this thread are all great! My favorite has gotta be the one posted by Cold Mage, because of the animation. Simply awesome.

And Thank you Helm, for the great crits. I know I am bad at folds and those I made pretty random, but I didn't really think about it so thanks for pointing it out. Without that no doubt my portrait would be a million times worse. Here's the new sprite, and the portrait:

(http://skalle.negative0.net/kosprit3.gif) (http://skalle.negative0.net/the_ownage3.gif)

I got some crits by Mori on the chat channel, and I'm pretty sure I will make some more changes to the sprite. I think I'll make his eyes closed too, to make him more sleepyhead like in the portrait. Everyone is welcome with there crits and comments, good and bad!

Zach: Nice picture, but DON'T save it as jpg!!!! Maybe it's photobucket changing the file format because it was BMP or something, but use PNG or GIF instead.

Archeal (Ar-shale) the Avatar of the demon Nockovok sent to the king of fighter tournament to establish Nockovoks reputation and secretly, to become more powerful than the foul demon and wrest himself from the chains of his contract. During his mortal days, his wife had contracted an unknown desease caused by Nockovok, and the demon took the opportunity to present himself to the premeir fighter of that time and tell Archeal that he would save his wife in exchange for his soul. Archael did it, and was promptly slain by followers of Nockovok. After grueling training, the now semi demon Archeal has decided to stop his evil journey- one way or another.

Meh. I'll do another at some point.

Nice work, hun.  I like the blocky pixelly thing in the hand.

Anyways I've taken mine out.  Guess I should have followed nearly everyone else and done SNK style all the way but I just don't enjoy trying to copy someone else's graphic style so unless its possibly some form of adoration and I don't adore SNK at all (the portrait style is ok but I just do not like the shading on their sprites at all, their characters are usually incredibly bland and games like SNK Vs Capcom, which I had really been looking forward just turned out to be hideously dated crap when I got it a while ago, nice work on Demetri but what the hell is with Guile?).  Mine would have looked shit and out of place in the flash thing anyway and brought everyone elses work down too.  Also I don't appreciate some of the crap I got e-mailed directly to my gmail account referring to this site and my own work.  I don't like being called a ripper or a tracer or anything like that, thanks, especially without proof.
This crap seems to happen everytime I try to join in with any community collaboration whether its pixelling or writing or whatever. Forget it.  I haven't been enjoying doing this for a while now as possibly shown by my lack of motivation to put up another website.  Dunno why the hell I pay £17.99 a month for broadband to get hassled by people on the net when I could just go out and get that for free offline...

Anyways nice work people.  Especially liking Ryumaru's moody looking demon thing. Nice atmospheric lighting on that thing.  Take care an' all that.

Nooooo!!! Dood, if other people think the stuff you make was ripped that's just their own incompetence. Everyone seems to act like only pixel artists with published/famous work are capable of doing something unbelievably great. Which sucks.

Nice, schu, but where's her other arm?

Nice edit, Alex-Hans. Much more dynamic than mine. The neck is also much improved...y' mind if I steal it for a sec... ;)

Oy Capt'n! :( I don't think you have to copy the style for this, especially since your sprite was so well made and the portrait was quite beautiful~ And whoever calls you a ripper tracer, I'll break their kneecaps ;D

Xion: The other arm is under the poncho. Same for the sprite, though hidden in the back.

Sorry, I'm a bit lost...

Anyways, I thought yours was one of the best submissions so far... and I was particularly blown away by the portrait (which I made cycle colours if you click on the sprite).  The project was never to copy SNK or Capcom styles... it was just to make a fighter sprite in your own style... or emulate if you wanted... this is probably a note for everyone.

Incidently.. I didn't realize until this afternoon that "Captain Blood" is not your standard username... you USED to go by Wolverine... who I remember from the old Pixelation days!

Schu, nice entry. The sprite looks very clean. Something about the arm bothers me though, it might be a tad short I think.
As for the portrait, I think the drawn one has more dynamicness, and the pixeled one her top lip is well, gone!  :o

This is pretty much a zombie + buff version of me. the pink stuff on the left one is a floral pattern i have on my (red) suit but i don't think i pulled it off too well. might add aa or something on it.
C&C would be nice. I'll work on my portrait nowish...

@Captain Blood: come on man, everyone here knows you're no ripper. It looks sweet in the flash thing. Style isn't important, its quality that is and your piece has more than enough of that.

Yeah, sorry I think I overreacted a little.  Am still having a lot of personal issues which have made me stressed and tired and I don't take kindly to having something I worked hard on being ripped off by someone (who I'm still tracking down, one of the accusers told me this guy also has the original pencil sketch I did for the portrait and showed them again as his own to prove that he was the original artist.  That at least narrows it down a bit as there were only one place I uploaded that picture - Photobucket account, and only one very obscure independent comic book company forum I posted it on).  Some of the stuff I do is fairly personal to me and it feels like people steal a bit of me when they do that and I really didn't need that right now.  Sounds sorta corny but you're all artists and I hope you understand or feel the same way.  I always figured that's our own lives and experiences and tastes that form the style and technique of artwork that each of us do.

Anyways I've had a lot of sleep today as its been surprisingly quiet... maybe the neighbors finally killed each other or something, I dunno,... and if you still want my piece in there I'd be honored.  I think the artwork done by everyone here is superb.  I didn't realise the flash was already up and containing some of the work.  Gotta admit it gives me a lil thrill to see something I did as part of that whole thing.  Did notice the portrait in his standard colors is a lil out of date as you can see touch ups done on the blue and green ones (I love that you got pallete selection in there and I'd encourage everyone else to make use of that)  If you want to change it to the updated version its athttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d32/Green_Arrow_III/feralbeastportrait.png. A nice forest backdrop would suit him well if you have one, if you can find one set at night then even better.

Yeah, still known as that on Pixeljoint's gallery thing and GMPixel.  Haven't got around to changing it on those places (if possible).  I've not really settled on another one since and don't feel a real need too anymore though it's still hard to shake off the name most people know ya as...
Apologies again for lack of anger control and the lil outburst...

1:because he has closed mouth in the fighter sprite, what else ;)
2: because the pallete i used for the small sprite didnt work very well with larger scales(many other here has done the same so why only asking me?)

In the fighter sprite, there is no evidence that he has a mouth at all--no visible teeth, lips, or mouth line.  In the portrait, there is a big lower jaw, with a different shape than the fighter sprite, and a full open mouth with tons of teeth.  You can't tell me that when he closes his mouth, his entire lower jaw and all of his teeth get tucked neatly away into his upper jaw.

no maybe not, but offcourse i exaggerated much more on the portrait because of less limits. its just the same with the hair. the portrait looks real furry while the fighter doesnt.
why are you picking so much on my entry?

Nobody is "picking on you" we are just offering constructive criticism.  I think the point about the colours is spot on... they hardly seem like the same character.  Your portrait is very well done with a nice dynamic lighting to it with soft browns... and the sprite is a burgundy, they just clash.

Well, heres my entry:

Is my portait ok, or should I make a cut-ff only at the bottom? Ill add the rest of the hair if wanted, just tell me.
I'd suggest adding a bit more than just a bust... maybe a bit closer to an upper torso... take a look at some other work to see what I mean.  It would look like a disembodied head floating at the bottom.

hey

well I just actually heard of these forums!!! and then came accross this thread, which I just cant resist to be apart of, if I may?

here is my entry... well I actually made this guy a lil while back, for a thread created by FROSTBITE (he must be in this??? I call on FROSTBITE to come!!!), in the Pixel Academy forums, right about the time that it died???

btw, I say hi to Gil, remember me from Pixel Academy? from the same thread we were both in above??? and I really agree with Scuba Steve about the eye of ya fighter. ;)

i see a lot of very very impressive pixel work here, congrats. :) just hope I can try to keep up, I dunno...

hope you think it is alright? I will try to make a good portrait, if I possibly can... I was actually thinking of making a totally new sprite of this guy, but we will see...

I need some tips on lineart--I don't have a tablet or a scanner available, but I have too much trouble trying to do the body with just a mouse...

I'm kinda tempted to try frankenspriting other sprites' linearts and then coloring everything in myself...would that be acceptable for this compilation?

also, I've fixed the outlining on the portrait, it came out quite well, but It's too small as just a head, so once I finish the design I'll be adding in the shoulders and a bit of the upper torso.

His name is Brutus the Mechanic. He was slightly inspired by some Hayao Miyazaki's background pilot characters in the film 'Porco Rosso.'

This thread is getting rather huge O_o. I must say however, it's been really nice seeing many of the artists tweaking and improving their entries.

@Captain Blood: Its great to see you spriting again, that portrait is superb, truly impressive... I miss your site... bring it back *cries*.

@Bo: You've made a nice improvement with your new werewolf. The pose is *much* better.

@Razz: Thats a kickass sprite ya got there, very beautiful colors; the black outline helps focus the sprite as well. Also your portrait came out quite nicely, dynamic as well.

@istvan: Somehow I don't trust that guy with a wrench... very nice fighter still.

@allthoseotherpeopleImtoolazytocommenton: d('.'<) thumbs up from kurbeh!

Question for Scuba: Are you allowing palette swaps or not? I think a few pages back you mentioned it was a royal pain to implement...but I can't remember clearly. >.<

that's awesome, but the portrait looks a lot darker than the sprite...no complaints with the sprite itself, it's beautiful, but maybe try making it look a little more like the portrait...

This was the inspiration, of course.

I AM considering making the sprite darker, obscuring the face, doing the eye glow... but I'm not sure if it would work for a fighter sprite where lighting conditions are dependant on stage and generally you have to strive for clarity more than silly lighting effects... but I might indeed edit after all...

EDIT: decided to update anyway. Various tweaks, armed the guy with MISTIKAL FORCE OF EVIL and generally spiced this one up

uh-Helm I really love the way you did the face and all but

...why'd his vest turn purple and his shirt ugly yellow all of a sudden? there's also a big problem with the lighting, the thing is you are not applying light right, light never darkens, it only applies to brighten something (like it was explained in that lighting tutorial in the resource thread) so when you use that purple light over the brighter...or nearly just as bright yellow it looks like the vest is just bleeding over it.

also, the sprite kinda looks like he stole the goggles from Splinter cell guy, I dont think it really makes sense to pretend splinter cell goggles will recreate the sense of lighting in the portrait, if anything you should make his top body gradually darken, as if the eyes sucked the light out of anything in the vincinity to lit everything from the eyes or something.

hey

call me crazy? but I really like Helm's portrait, I just assume it was an image of his fighter during the night time, which I think is really cool. I do not know much of the technical details of lighting? so I cant comment on that :\ but it all works for me :) but maybe it can look even better with Camus's advise??? i dunno... BUT I do think the eyes need a little work, they look very plain and undefined, well I think the glow needs to be softer as the light grows, if ya get what I mean?

BTW, I like ya latest edit on ya actual fighter sprite, how ya made the face/eyes look more like in the portrait, gives him alot more character!!!

There's various unrealistic things about the lighting, I agree. It's supposed to be in nighttime, but also, if I went with complete realism I'd just have to have it all blue with radiant blue secondary lightsource as the eyes, and I thought that would be boring. So the lighting is comic-book style, and colour-mixed because I feel like it. Besides what you mention, the eyes really do not light anything, it's as if they suck in light instead of giving it out, so all talk if realism goes out of the window.

I like your idea of gradually making his top darker, but I don't think I can pull it off nicely right now. As it is now it IS a bit half-assed (with just the face going dark) but I think it's alright. Can't really invest much more time in this anyway.

Thanks for the critique, though.

Wasn't the original King of Spriters to showcase the best of the best?  Hence the title?  I had no idea it was open to the public (either now or ever) - and if so, does that not defeat the purpose?  I looked on the original with longing because at the time I knew I did not belong there.  My work was certainly not good enough to be showcased with the other masterpieces.

Well... It's open to the public... but I do institute some form of quality control.  Many people have been redoing their sprites until they look just right, at which time I may add them.  I will say this, there are no sprites there that don't deserve to be.  Clearly some work is of a much higher caliber than others, but that is not to say that every work there is well done.  I have been highly impressed with the quality of work this has been exhibited thus far... and there are still some sprites that are incredible that I'm waiting for portraits so I can add them.

I know its probably not perfectly done yet, but thats why i posted. saw some other people get revisions, so figured I could try.

sorry for the non transparency. Put it with one of the colours I used to help make it stand out.

couple of things Im wondering..
is the shirt too softly shaded? I want it to be like that tan leather material.
Pants too bright? blue a good colour.

anyways. thats what iv got, quite pleased actually with it.
hope it still can be placed in genre of 'fighter'

Keops - I'm having some serious issues with the midget legs ... as I like to refer to them.  He has really long upper legs, but his lower legs are stumpy at best.  His upper body is really long as well.  It just looks a bit off.

Love your avatar though - shows a lot of character and emotion.

Didn't Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter have a hidden character who was drawn much more 'cartoonish' than the regular characters?  Ain't had much chance to play it in a long while but I seem to remember he was some kind of 'otaku' fanboy type person or something?  Anyways I like the pirate a lot.  Almost makes me want to do a pirate character myself.

just a shame the hair is a solid colour.

Awesome work on the portrait Alex! So detailed and carefully crafted. The face, the breasts, the folds, the arms- all beautfifully shaded. Apart from the solid hair mentioned by flaber (which looks like youre planning on correcting) I have a couple of other things that bother me.
The lineart looks rather awkward. Posing with your arm in such a place, whilst holding a spear, just doesnt do it for me. Something about the angle of her neck and spear makes it almost look like she's just caught a weapon which was aimed at her head.

The hand holding the spear doesnt seem to give any sense of weight, and its angle loooks like it was drawn before the rest of the character. It just doesnt look like it's holding the spear tight enough to actually hold it.

The only other thing is her right eye. Cover it with your finger (against the monitor) and the face looks great. It just seems like it needs to be shifted down slightly. It ain't easy lining up facial features at this sort of angle.

I know I'm being nitpicky, and am by no means a pixel master, but it just seems a shame to not have this incredible piece absolutely perfect. Once again, the level of '3D rendered' detail youve managed to attain with a few pixels is brilliant.

The sprite is also tight. I like that you gave her unconventionally wider-than-the-average-femme-video-game-character hips. The only thing I'd consider is substituting the dark black AA with perhaps a tad lighter colour and remove the slightly pillowness to the thigh shading.

EDIT: Forgot to nominate a website were I accepted into this thing. I'll just use my pixel joint gallery for the time being please: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/profile.asp?id=279

Thanks,
Various people have mentioned the black pixels on the sprite being too dark and make the thighs look jagged, I'm thinking I should fix that.
As for the hair on the portrait, I left it solid black since the sprites was solid, but now I think I agree that it looks out of place. I'll try to fix that up.
I realized the hand was not holding the spear correctly after I had finished drawing that part, but I liked the way it looked so I didn't fix it :P Hands are tough.

instead of changing the hand, just add a grip on the spear that thickens it enough that it looks more natural

Hm, yeah, there's an over-use of black.  I dunno what I was going for there (comic book style?) but I don't think it looks very aesthetically pleasing at all.  So I'm trying a new style here;

istvan - Very, very disturbing  :o  Heh, but if that's what you were going for, awesome job!  The buldge is especially disturbing  :'(

Dhaos - It's extremely well done technically, but the style isn't my flavor.  However, that's completely subjective.  Good stuff!

Alex - I can't help but feel she has a very "lustful" look on her face (whether that was intentional or not), so I think the best course of action for the hand placement would be upright along the spear.  JMO.  The color choices, as always, are exceptional and your style is as always, flawless.

Kon as soon as I saw your sprite I had to play with it to make it a little more "realistic".
The white eyes and teeth just seemed too goofy to me.  I wasn't going to bother saying anything, but now that you've posted the portrait, it bothers me even more since youve gone so realistic with her face in the portrait.  Maybe something to think about.

I rarely am speechless when it comes to seeing sprites, however the potrait you made Alex completley winded me. That IS pixel art.  The sprite itself is nice, was hoping for a muscular character from you, deep down inside...but i can forgive you for a portrait like that :D
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: yosh64 on January 15, 2006, 11:11:15 am
hey

@Ro83rt: I am quite concerned as your sprite doesn't appear "finished" to me... where are his hands? I must say that it looks very flat, especially around the outer legs and also the arms! I think you need to add a darker shade around them? I also think that the origin of the folds on the legs are odd? I would think they should be from the knees? and should be used to also define the knees? alike Scuba Steve showed earlier in this thread? and also I do not understand his right arm sleeve either? same for the feet? and finally the line art of your protrait stands out to much to me? well this is really so on the neck and hat areas, I think you need to blend the colors more? maybe even add a color? but overall I quite like your portrait... hmm, anyhows thats all for now... but maybe someone will greater knowledge can extend on what I'm trying to say? if yas understand?

sorry if I was/am not being constructive enough with my comments, and also sorry if I am being harsh, I hope you can continue and improve. I will attempt to make an edit on your sprite to help, but I don't know if I have the skills to do so.
---
EDIT:
okay, here is my edit... well someone else can probly do better? I just edited mostly his right side... and I still dont understand the end of his right arm sleeve and what its meant to be? :\
NOTE: I just edited my edit, just changed the right arm a bit, amoungst some other lil things...
NOTE: I just edited my edited edit, just added a bit more depth to mostly the right side of his body, and other lil things... :)

hopefully you can see he now has alot more volume and contrast? I myself actually had a simular problem with my first fighters I made, and was lucky to have FROSTBITE to point me in the right direction with an EDIT! :)

Hey thanks for giving my one a much more appropiate background.  Looks pretty cool.  The default color portrait still needs updating as you can clearly see some differences lower down when he switches through palletes. Also I don't have a website anymore but I figured it should be ok to just link to my PixelJoint account as thats got the largest amount of old and recent pixels of mine.  Is here http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/profile.asp?pg=1&id=449&sec=icons

It's really shaping up now, huh.  The boards looking much more crowded and the different styles are great.  Superb work all round but I gotta say my personal faves are by Kenneth, Dhaos, Schu, Kazuya, Sonic, DE, Razz and Chilly.  Also I like Bo's dogman creature's portrait.  Would love it more if it had saliva dripping off the mouth and looking even more rabid than it already does with that crazy eye.  Istvan's one is great too but the portraits pose is just a tad disturbing.  Something about Silver's portrait reminds me of something I can't quite place, but I like it. And I love Helm's portrait just cos it sorta reminds me of Chakan and various comic book art.

By the way Scuba, my sister's boyfriend has a scarf very much like the one on your fighter.  Very similar colors.  We tried hanging him from it at one point.

If I got time I'd like to do another one if that's ok?  I got an idea last night of what I want to try.

Try to incorporate some of Yosh's ideas into your sprite... help bring out some depth to your character.  I like the black added under the hat, it makes it feel like he has a head, I would try doing the same to the portrait because it feels like the sprite did before.  I think the portrait in general needs some finishing, it looks much like a rough draft.  Maybe some highlights on the edge of the folds, some detail to his hat which looks very flat and some work to the swords to make them appear shiny.

Nobody is singleing you out, take a look at Mirre's sprite (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=759.0).  She's gone through a ton of redos to get it looking just right, we're just trying to help you make the best possible character possible.

Hey ndeal, I really hope you will make something. The last one you made was great.

DementedHero: It looks good, but the pants look more realistic while the body has more contrast. Maybe you should add another color or change the existing ones. About the red hair, I think it could work on the sprite. If it should work on the portrait though, I think you need more of it. Also the colors doesn't match, maybe you could switch the red to some other color that looks better with the grey.

Okay, here's what I have.  I noticed that no one has done a really, freakishly big guy.  You know, that one character that's really powerful but really slow so no one chooses him.  Yeah, that guy, well I did one and he's just a regular blue collar construction worker (he's the head of his union too).  He'll smash you up with all his signs with painful and funny results.  Like, if he uses his "falling rocks" sign.  Then rocks will fall from above on to the opponent (it's like his projectile) and so forth.

He needs a portrait though.  That's coming next... ^_^

Drfeng: He looks really red... maybe add some more contrast... or another colour... perhaps in his pants.

JWW: He looks a bit like Bibendum (google that) because of the way his clothing is shaded.  Maybe attempt a more natural ruffled clothing appearance, there ae plenty of sprites to look at for inspiration.

I'm glad people are still doing some really top notch work

I can see what you're talking about with the folds but since his legs aren't bent, wouldn't you NOT see the folds especially not so defined? I mean his legs are straight so folds wouldn't be made right?

I think it's the fabric being pulled to the sides... the only way it could do that is if he was splitting his legs apart, like half splits.  If the wind is blowing it, then the folds on one leg are correct and the other side should match the same direction.  Otherwise it should probably pull fro his belt down since that's the tightest place, or if it's dangling on the ground, it could ruffle a bit down there.

Not that original, I know, but I haven't had the time to do some proper design work. Also, I like to keep my "good" designs for myself ;)
Made in my own fighting game measurement: SNK size, Capcom shading. This'll be my submission for now, but maybe I'll doodle something more if I have more time. C&C is always welcome. The PNG transparancy works fine in Firefox, but Explorer is giving me mixed impressions. Let me know if it's not working.

Helm: I think I can explain that. After it was about half done, I noticed that it was just to large compared to my other sprites. I'm not very happy with how the resizing went. The arms suffered the most and I couldn't quite figure out how to fix them. I'll look into it some more.

Dhaos: Hehe, veteran? Don't think I'm quite at that stage yet :P Well, I do have a Deviantart page, but I've yet to upload any pixel art. But here's the link if you (or anyone) is interested: http://imson.deviantart.com/

hey

@takacin: just by looking at your fighter, I think that it was not pixelled??? and I counted the colors used in one of your sprite frames, which was 244??? if that is correct, then thats insane for a pixelled fighter??? anyhows as soon as I saw, I thought PS Burn and Dodge tools, but i dunno. :-\ but I thinks I sees alot of computed AA!!!

@DRfeng: I still think your fighter is too red? I thinks its like someone is shining a RED torch on him? I think you need another different color to completely break the flow of red? well only his pants really, I think why do the pants need to be red, they are not part of him?

umm finally, some of the newer fighters that I took a liking to are... hondo's big dude, sonic_reaper's "yorick1.gif" (sure like them pants/legs), snake's (wish I could pixel so well in that style), and not to forget michi's (nice portrait)... hmm, well I never mentioned the older ones that I really liked... well I'll save mentioning em for another time.

Silver: I've been enjoying your progress on your sprite and portrait for a bit now and I gotta say I love the colours and comical pose he has. Something bothers me about the portrait though. I feel like his chin has been lost in that beard whereas the sprite version doesn't look so brutal. His arms and hair could use with some selout and aaing.. kind of blocky atm. His chest looks like it's been stitched together and... well... look at my simplistic edit to see the rest. (A mirror tool was used to quicken my edit for you.) Keep in mind as well that I don't do sprites myself so anything I say or do make be held against me for being an idiot.

Is there any set date for when no more entries are accepted? I accidently ran into what appeared to be a test page in google when the forums were down, and was afraid I was too late; though I guess it really was a test as you haven't announced anything yet.

I can try lowering the contrast in the colours later on, but first I would like to finish the portrait.

Cool sprite Toby :)

The animation looks weird, due to lack of leg movement. He appears to be a very energetic fighter, one that would be "bouncing" around the screen...I hope you get my point...

In fact, I just noticed this, the only thing that moves is the chest...maybe some cangings on the arms and the head could lean a lil bit...not too much however. And if you want to keep the calm animation you have, maybe his legs could bent a bit...

About the portrait, I think his head is too small...good anatomy btw

Actually, the head on the sprite is just right since I was the model for my sprite (although I'm not quite that muscular ;) I'm a pretty small guy, so my head does look a bit large when compared to my body.

I'm aware that the head on the portrait is a tad bit too small. But I think I'll just have to live with it, since making it bigger would probably be a very time consuming process for someone that works on a piece as slowly as me.

Any comments on the anatomy or shading or anything else than the head?

Just briefly, since you asked, the small patch of dithering in the neck looks somewhat out of place. You may also be able to fix the head size issue reasonably hassle free simply by extending the chin a little further and seperating the eyes.

Decided i might have a go cause I haven't done a fighter sprite before and all the entries so far look great. had abit of trouble so i looked at a few other sprites. That helped alot. Don't quite know why I started with the pants, probably because I thought they'd be easiest. I think it looks okay so far, but I don't like the left leg (right side from our perspective) very much. Criticism is hugely appreciated.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/neoriceisgood/pwnedits/kingofspriters.png) Here's coloured version, if you prefer the Black and white; I might go for that.

Half way done with the portrait, are there any size restrictions for it? Mine is becomming pretty large.
Heh.. Even you have got darn a lot better while I've been gone.. But is that an ear or just something coming out from his shoulder?

Are you talking about his actual ear? Because I would call that the side of his head, not his shoulder.

Those look mega realistic, good job! I love the shading and shapes you did on the folds. Although it's a bit too dark, i don't specially see it as a problem, since denim pants exist in such colors. But keep in mind, when you're adding a top part for the character, that  lighter colors will contrast with the bottom, making it even darker, while dark colors will bump up the general lightness look of the pants.

Thanks for the tip, as I've said, this is my first time pixelling a fighter sprite, and any little things help alot :P would anyone have any suggestions on how to do the shoes? I had a go and they looked horrible >.<

@Xero

I have nothing to say about the shading, it is top

But I think before work on shading and details
you should sketch out the pose

For example here is my character before going into details

not very clean but I can still read the pose

@durkadoo

thanks for mention that
fix that later after finish the portrait

Thanks vierbit, I'll try finishing the pose before doing anymore. I won't actually "sketch it" cause I don't draw my work then scan it or anything, but i'll finish it yeah. Just curious, which do you think is best, top or bottom?

@neoriceisgood: Hey you almost finished ^_^ looking good so far.

@xero: Can't wait to see that guy finished, folds are looking great.... he just needs some appendages...or maybe not hehe.

@toby: Intersting proportion style, good pose and color. Btw the eyes seem to be looking in different directions, is this intentional?

@Dhaos - Don't be expecting too much :P I've never done a portrait before either hahahaha. Never done anything really remotely human o.O

Dash, you must be really uncomfortable in the crotch. [ >_<']
Looks kinda tight down there.

You're off to a good start, but there are some...things:

Your neck looks like a column. Maybe thin it by about 1 px?
You wear bellbottoms? It looks like your knees are a bit too high.
Your torso needs to be rotated a little in the direction that he's facing.
Also, your torso is a bit...straight and undefined. I mean, it's like the same thickness allawaydown.
The shoulder of your outstretced arm looks disjointed. Ow.
Massive feet. But that could be a stylisticity.
Pullypantsup. Unless you sag, there shouldn't be that much space between your bellybutton and pants. And if there is, like I said before, you might wanna loosten up the crotch area.

Is it done? Are you going to detail it? ATM, it looks really cool, but that's about it. It's like a plastic template : featureless.

Sohashu:
Increase the contrast to better match the pants.
You might want to look at a few pixel art tutorials and pick up on a few techniques like selout and aa. You've also got some anatomy issues.
The hand holding the sword looks far too small. The outstretched forearm looks broken. (I'd be worried if my arm bent like that.) The leftmost hand also looks broken. The head is very (no offense) unattractive. Lower the eyes about 2px., add some details to the mask, and fix that chunk in the back of his head.
It looks like you've got some stray pixels by the waist. The flesh-colored ones.
You've got light colors adjacent to dark colors. Might wanna add a buffer in between.

Wow, you're showing incredible improvement. *thumbs up!*

First off thanks for the constructive criticism.  Thats why I signed up here.

No Offense to Xero but I got rid of the pants.  I felt like I was cheating.

On the anatomy, the head is cut off by the sword(in front of it)and is just under 7 heads actually.

The mask is unfinished.  I was planning on adding some crests or possibly some symbols.

I think it looks like stray pixels as the skin tone is close to the belt buckle.

The forearm I fixed.

The eyes I lowered.

hey

@Sohashu: Firstly the position of his knees seems very VERY odd to me... I mean, to me his legs look all twisted? also his right foot looks very odd to me, well the perspective of it or something? his head looks quite flat to me? the other big thing that points out to me is his stance... it seems like it's emotionless... maybe he should have his legs futher apart in some sort of agressive or defensive manner? maybe it's just me? sorry I can't help you more with the "how to" on fixing it... but I bet someone is around who can!

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/hopeful6sw_yosh64.png)
I done an edit to strait'n his legs out like I think, hope you dont mind? hmm, well his left leg seems to look to short now? needs to be moved down a tad from above the knee.

ALSO I assume the shorts are NOT finished? so I won't comment on them as yet... AND I also don't like the DARK pixels around his abs, as in the 1st version, as they make them look out of place and unnatural or something to me?

Kewl.
The only thing bugging my eye is the hand. And honestly, I don't know why. Perhaps it's a bit too small? Yes, even the reference chick (the smaller one) has a bigger hand than your dude. Probably innacurate, but it would look better bigger, IMHO.
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!

hey

@Zolthorg: I dont understand some of the folds of the pants. How can there be folds strait accross from above the knee? that looks very odd to me. I think there would only be folds strait across at the top if they were wearing greatly oversized/long pants, and they have pulled the pants up from above the knee (rather than folding at the bottom???), so they are not to long. But they would have to be constantly re-pulling their pants up above their knees, as the force from the weight of the lower pants and movement would have them drop back down? I can kinda understand folds strait across at the bottom, as the cloth has less force pulling down to straiten them out. ALSO your sprite doesn't seem to carry many characteristics of a "fighter"? maybe you should have put them into a fighters stance to help this? but i dunno... :-\ but yea, good luck with the portrait!

just thought of some more things...
I also agree that the hands are to small (well much so with the right hand), and I think this really makes the bracelet look odd? like it would fall off right away?
Their (sorry, dunno if they are male or female) right arm also looks much to short, unless the arm is stretched backwards into the distance, but the lighting/shading and the perspective of the hand and bracelet dont seem to support this.

Woah! It's been a while since I've replied here. Just so you know I scrapped my samurai sprite. Since I made my decision I've been thinking about weather or not I should just sit back and not participate or try again. I thought about it a lot and while I was thinking pletty of things happened. So my final decision was........Finish what I started! It's what my sister would want sooo.....HEre it is still a WIP

Oh yeah, you know it....It's Pocket Style! C & C would be well apriciated because this is my first ever attempt at this.

And while I'm typing I wanted to congratulate those who I read about in the Pixelation: The Game thread. I don't think I'll ever be that good but I guess only time will tell....

Thanks Scuba! I hoped you would approve. Well I worked on it most of the day and this is what I came up with. I think I'm gonna animate him later.

 (http://h1.ripway.com/ro83rt/portfolio/Cobalt.gif) EDIT: (http://h1.ripway.com/ro83rt/portfolio/Cobalt2.gif)

The animation kinda messed up in the saving process so I don't think I'll use it but I wanted the feedback so...

Heh, I even came up with a little background info for him.

Basically he was sent from his homeworld to conquer Mars but got lost and ended up landing on Earth. Of course he didn't expect anybody to be on Mars so he was caught WAY off guard when he saw how many lifeforms roaming around. He decided that he should just conquer it anyway, but there was only one problem. He didn't know how to fight!

So he posed as Cobalt, a Scottish immigrant with a skin condition and learned Martial Arts with his lifetime membership to Tiger Shulmans's. Now he's ready to open up a can of whoop-ass on the planet Earth!        Heh.....Pretty Sweet right?

*crickets*

Ugh...Yeah....I'm gonna go work on the portrait now.... C + C if you want....

HI, I'm a new guy who wants see his first Pixel-Fighter in that battlefield with the others fighters, Scuba Steve, i hope that you can approve my fighter

This fighter is a version of myself with the Dragon Style from Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance/Deception and he's wearing Goku's Uniform. Obviously, his name is Dragon

I tried to show some things that could be changed to make it smoother. It collides with style modification though so you don't have to take all (or any for that matter) into consideration. I just was giving a edit on things I think could be improved.

hey

@Dragon: Firstly I think the character of your fighter is cool, I like it. I dont understand the shading of his right arm, looks quite odd to me... AND I think the other arm could be better defined also? The pants look rather messy, well maybe it's just them dark lines through out them! The design of the boots look a little odd to me, I think they lack definition. In the portrait I think his hand seems to small? compared to the size of his arm! AND I like what Grops has done to smooth out and further define the portrait, I think you should take his advise...

Anyhows I am really quite looking forward to see how this turns out, I think it could be quite good!

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos_yosh64.png)
I attempted an edit of your sprite to try and help, hope you dont mind? someone else can probly do better than what I have done, as I'm no expert. As you can see I tried to fix the arms, neck and legs a bit more to my liking AND didn't touch the boots as yet. I also organised the pallete, there were alot of stray colors?

NOTE: Think I lost the dragonball z'ness style folds with my edit to the legs... But yea, I think you need to lighten them dark lines defining the folds!

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos2_yosh64.png)
I mostly just redone the pants somewhat...

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos3_yosh64.png) AND/OR (http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos4_yosh64.png) AND/OR (http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos4222_yosh64.png)
I just redone the arms...

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos5_yosh64.png) AND (http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos52_yosh64.png)
I just edited the rest as I thought... really hope you dont mind? AND I didn't know how the boots were meant to be... :\

hey

I just wanted to add that in Grops's EDIT, as you can see the lighting of the leg is much better defined, you can now clearly see he is in a crouched stance. I actually prefer that "classier" style myself, but maybe you can redo the legs alike Grops's, but with more folds to make it more dragonball z'ish... If I make any sense?
---

Was just thinking about my pixelling... I mean doesn't my EDIT look pillow'ish? nothing is sharp or whatever... well this is really more so with clothing... but nevermind, this is not about me... anyhows goodluck with ya sprite Dragon.

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos6_yosh64.png) AND (http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos62_yosh64.png)
Well I just done yet another edit, this time I just better defined the lighting, and also made the cloths less pillow'ish...

EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos7_yosh64.png) AND (http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/Dragonkos72_yosh64.png)
Another edit... just tried to better define the lighting on the arms... anyhows hopefully things can be learnt from all my EDITs, hehe. :)

@.TakaM: I was looking back over your fighter, and I find the upper body to look quite flat and odd to me... You probly done with it, but anyhows I thought I'd try and maybe help give some advise on giving it more depth.

.TakaM's original
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/TakaM/other/twinsenfighter.gif) AND (http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9399/kensf37rh.gif)
Incase anyone forgets his fighter... as you can see he is based on Ken from Street Fighter.

My EDIT
(http://www.supernerd.com.au/~yosh64/temp/twinsenfighter_yosh64.png)
Well I don't think my edit looks quite like the "Street Fighter" style, but you can hopefully see it has more depth in his upper body.

ALSO it appears to me that the light shining on "Ken's"/(your fighters) pants/legs is coming from THE right? but the light on ya fighters ball and head comes from THE left? as ya would already know, in my edit the light comes from THE left. Anyhows that's it for now, hopefully I make some sense?

@instant: hmm, your fighter sprite looks a bit of a mess to me... It seems like you have tried to draw in details and forgot about lighting... i dunno... but my advise to you is forget about detail, and focus on lighting, as I think light defines form AND detail.

the anatomy is a bit crazy in places, the lower legs look really odd, the shoes look incomplete and undefined. the shorts look quite odd to me also, they look very pillowing and flat in space. finally I think the best part is his face.

Well Grops, Turbo and Yosh64, i'm ready with the portrait and the pixel-fighter. I can learn a few things about your posts by helping me in improve the quality of my fighter.

Portrait:

More big the left Hand
i improved the left eye
I placed more shadows and Clarity.

Pixel-Fighter

I need to do it again from the beginning because some kinds of poses needs a drastical change.

I hope you like it

P.S: Grops, thanks for your post of the portrait but i prefer to support the nose like Dragon Ball; Yosh64, your boots are great but I did the costume in DB style and that means that i have to do the entire uniform, I hope that you do not take it badly :P

Can mine be considered "done'' enough to be accepted into this?

I -want- to add an extra arm to it; and perhaps animate the sprite;

But a dreadfull combination of school and my computers dying all the time has left me unable to find the time to really finish it;

And King of Spriters 2003 is one of the greatest things I recall from the old community. . so being able to even enter something to the 2006 variety is so grand  :'(

Head and shoes aren't finished and I seriously don't know how I am going to do the hand...help on this would be highly apreciated.

I think the similarity between my sprite and snake's one is quite obvious (mainly because I did mine watching snake's all the time - we gotta watch good stuf ;) ), especially on the legs and torso (although I cared alot more about colour selection and unification). For this reason, I don't think that it would be legitime to submit something that was ALMOST copied from another piece (although, as you can see above, I pixeled it ALL myself).

If Steve (and all of you) don't feel bothered, I will finish this and move on to the portrait (whose sketch you can see here (http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/4411/finalment4sl.jpg)). If you agree with what I said above (about it being alot like snke's sprite) just say so and I'll consider this a simple practice for a further submission.

Thanks,
Filax

@seven - yes I can, I had drawn a "stance" (I'll see if I can dig it up) that was similar to this, and I asked a friend (here at home, great with art, working on a SF2 type game) to help with the sprite/s, so I gave him said stance drawing and he returned some lineart (all B&W with somments) so I edited it, and colored it. Turned out I drug this to him, and he confessed all these "awsome" sprited he was helping me with and put into his game are from that site... -.- I am so ashamed that I used him for help (the "lineart" process went back and forth a few times to clarify) *sigh* No more help from him... I'll see if I can dig up that stance and start again... -.- It was sooo nice too, well... hrm... time to start over
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!
Post by: Pawige on March 31, 2006, 11:48:17 pm
I must say it's just a bit odd that you managed to "edit" and "color" the "lineart" to be exactly the same as the original sprite, with only minor alterations to the palette.

Your portrait lineart looked like it could go somewhere. If you actually made that and didn't trace it from somewhere, I'm sure that with practice you'd be perfectly capable of creating your own sprites.

Yeah, of course :o I'm getting on that now. And like I said, he "helped" me with the lineart pushing me in this direction (I thought he was nust on some choices) and said that it should be black here, darkest here, lightese here, and middletoned here... I thought he was helping me... maybe he was doing all of the real work (well not acually doing it, but...)

Um, would i be able to participate aswel? I've always wanted to make a fighter sprite, so here's my first ever one, and i thought it was worth joining in.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y6/Larwick/LarwickSprite2.gif

Ok, and here's the portrait done:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y6/Larwick/LarwickSpritePortrait.gif

The sprite looks like a female version of Serge from Chrono Cross  :D
... you're right. O: I have my (beloved) Serge figurine sitting right next to me, and I have to say she does! That really isn't a bad thing, though. She's quite awesome nonetheless.

I think I might take a stab at making one of these suckas. >:

Hm ... you're going to hate me saying this, but why are his knees bent like that?  He isn't really about to move or attack, he's just standing still.  Kind of an akward pose for non-action.

VERY quick edit illustrating what I mean so some of the folds on the pants will be off (this is just a guide);

I agree with sonic_reaper. o: It looks less awkward when his legs aren't bent so hard. But it's kinda boring... maybe you could try doing something with the other arm that's just hanging there? ;)

I recognize my pose may not be correct, but your's looks awful, even for a quick edit (no offense, I'm sure you could do better if wasted more time on it, which you don't have to). I may take photos to ilustrate it...tomorrow.
About the arm...I know it's  doing nothing, but I don't really have anything to give him...I may change it's pose afterward though...
At this moment I'm more worried about the hand, could anyone please give some C&C on it?

EDIT:
I know that new hand sucks, but I only spent a minute on it...

EDIT2: Just looked at Stitchy's post again and I noticed what was wrong with both my sprite and your edit...In mine, the legs a bent alot, in yours, the (his) left leg is not bent at all. At first, I tried posing his legs somewhat like this (http://galeon.com/efex/web/imagenes/capcom/OrochiSF3-FINAL.gif), but it didn't work out...

Ahh, so you wanted him floating? You can actually take lotsa liberties with floating~

I think what would really help this sprite is some dynamic motion. To show you what I mean, I doodled this, as I am not too good at explaining what I mean in words.

This is (pretty much) the same pose you had originally, just from a different angle, and his head is turned slightly towards the camera. I also tried to make his legs not as bent and more relaxed... I hope you can get some ideas from this. :-X

Not to sound like an ass, but if you think his bent-knee pose looks better/more natural, you're just ignoring problems with the sprite that are right in front of you.  You have many options as far as action poses are concerned.  No one said you needed to make a still standing sprite, the options for an action pose are limitless.

I want to add the scarf (as you can see my avatar,) and maybe a loose belt around her hips. :-X What do you guys think? C&C welcome~

EDIT: New and improved. I fiddled with it so it would look a bit better on a dark background, so it looks a little funky around the edges on the light grey.

Sorry for all that, I was kinda tired tonight...hmm...I just noticed I sounded like an ass. Sorry again...And this is just a practice, so I should be listening more to you, in order to get things better when I make the real sprite...

Stitchy: Yeah, that's the pose I find more correct. And, oh,  ace sprite you got there. I'm not sure if I like the feet much, but they're probably part of the design, right?

hey

Wowzers, the new bunch of entries are great, nice work!

@Stitchy: I think you have pulled off your "Stichy" character sprite really well, I quite prefer the top one (well judging on this background), I like the red'er hair, and the stitches less defined... but yea, I imagine alot of work went into this. Your avatar rocks also, can't wait to see your portrait! <- I'd have to say yours overall (character, design, pose, lighting and pixelling) would be (one of) / (if not) my favourite(s)!

@cdi: Haha, well it's just that the other day when I was browsing these forums (didn't check on this thread, well hadn't for a while now) I actually saw your avatar (of ya fighter sprite) and downloaded it to my computer for further study. I was really impressed by the pants, and actually couldn't really figure for sure if it was a real KOF sprite or not, hehe. So yea, nice work.

Anyhows if I myself am to be submitting a Sprite + Portrait set, then I would be creating a whole new character, as I've really lost interest for my old character, and would rather not pixel a portrait of he.

edit
Well I just read back through some posts, and saw Seven's post, AND now I see cdi's fighter really is an SNK fighter sprite. I strongy agree with Pawige's comments, and find it quite sad to see these things occur... so yea, thought I better edit my post.

Hmm, the hair has kinda... meh... contrast. Try using more white in the area where the lightsource is on his hair. I'm really loving the shading on the pant legs, though. o: But it seems like he could use more shading around his groin. Some shading on the lower side of (his) left arm would make it look real nice, too. You've really got a really awesome design going, can't wait to see the end result. :3

And speaking of results... I've finished my sprite and portrait. xD If you do add it, dear Steve, please link me at http://stitchy.deviantart.com/ because uh... I've got nothing else. Anyways, here they are:

hey

@Seven: Well firstly I think it's another cool designed fighter :). Now I think his hair looks quite flat, and maybe so to the face? I also find it hard to distinguish his arm from his body, I think you maybe need to hilight his arm more, and give the appearance of greater space between them. Anyhows that's all for now.

edit:
I quickly done an edit to show you what I mean...hope ya don't mind? Also, for his right arm, I didn't change any actual form, just changed the shades.

Ohh, I just noticed that it looks like his right arm rist band is somewhat connected to the band/belt around his body. I think you need to break them apart, well I just quickly updated my edit to show you this. Ohh me again, lol... just realised now it was the his skin between his cloth and gloves, but it did look to me somewhat like a rist band oddly blending/connecting with the belt around his body. ;)

Well, I think it's done. I'm not too satisfied with the pants, though. It's using many more colors than it should; a massive 15. I'll admit I did poorly with the color management.[almost hard to believe I used more colors on one sprite today than I used for a whole scene yesterday] If it seems small compared to the other fights, it's because I'm a short person ;D. Portrait will be in the works soon.

@Seven: Sweet work on the pants, but the whole upper body seems a bit iffy to me, the anatomy on the arms don't look right, and the skin tight outfit doesn't suit him.

@Stitchy: Teach me.

@Setz: I'm the opposite, I like the pants, but the shading on the shirt really weirds me out. The folds look a bit unrealistic. Also, I'm not sure whats going on with the head and left hand (right side from our perspective).
Title: Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!

I see what you mean about the hoodie. if anyone feels like editing it to show me a better way, feel free ;p. As for the head, the eyes are shadowed out, as for the hand, it's kidn of hard to tell, but the shirt has a loop [one side only, I kinda fell down the stairs x_X] and the fingers are abit mashed together, kind of gradually going from out, to in. I fail at explain :p looking at it again, I also need to soften the outline on the shoes. that dark blue doesn't work compared to the lightness of the pants.

Yay, good C+C. Now I'm much more satisfied with it, but still don't think it's "perfect". Stitchy, I just didn't add so much white because I wanted his hair to be more of a gray than a actual white, see? But I got the contrast and flatnesse problem (at least, I think so). I also took some better references for the arm anatomy (here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=265092&posted=1)).

Ahh, I see. xD But, it's coming along great! I think you could add more contrast to his arms, but even still, they look much better. ;D Can't wait to see the final version... and the portrait. And maybe you could give him some kind of gauntlets around his wrists/arms? Maybe you could add some deadly spur weapons on them if you're going for the futuristic cowboy look? xD Just random thoughts~

I should check here more often. Lots of quality stuff on display.

Filax_666: I was browsing the topic and thought there was something familiar about you character. Thought you had just got similar colours, but I didn't read that you actually used mine for reference. Somehow, I feel really flattered. Heh, when I got a closer look at him, I sort of get the idea that he's his little brother.

"Let's go for a drink, eh?" "You're buying."

Stitchy: Lookin' good there. Just a minor nitpic. When you added the scarf, her lower hand's shape gets washed out. Maybe add an outline?

Steven: A few things I'd like to point out. Noticed that your characters legs have the knees to high. Mostly the left one. On his right arm, there isn't any bulge separating the shoulder from the biceps, just a straight line. The cloth thing between his legs is bending to the right and should really be falling down. Lastly, his left hand has the palm facing away from him. This isn't really wrong, but try doing that yourself.

Keep em' comming people. Look forward to it.

Great sprite Seven, and nice portrait.  ;D

Only one crit: the skintone in the fighter's pose is too saturated compared with the rest of the sprite.
I made an edit to show you what I mean. I took all the colors from your own portrait.

If you compare them in a darker background you will see that the skin of the original doesn't fit with the style of the other colors. The skin standout too much.

Now I see that you have a lot of talent Seven. Someday maybe we can make a game together.  ;)

Meh, I was going to do that when I first shaded his skin... Like, I just used this scheme to shade the sprite, then I'd change colors to fit the rest of it (since I'm using purpleish tones for the whole thing). But I just forgot to do this part heh (really!)... Thanks for reminding me ;D

Ah Right.  Personaly I think the portrait needs a lot of cleanup still.  The sprite is decent but the larger image is plagued by jagged edges, rough antialiasing and some rough anatomy.  Try creating a thread about the portrait and getting some advice.

I'm also not real keen on the whole DBZ theme... but I'd let it slide, it's not like it was a stolen sprite (however I should make Takam redo his since I learned later his bottom is just Ken's).  DBZ just seems uncreative to me after seeing so many DBZ-esque sprites... especilly by old friends of mine back in high school.

All of your advices is for the portrait?   ???. I'm absolute original with my pixel-fighter (that I used a Sub-Zero picture of MK Deadly Alliance) and all I had to do is draw the lines and in the portrait, I use a picture of me to do it. I like a lot DB that I have to do a fighter who has a gi (o uniform) of Kame Sennin (or Master Roshi)'s school

Well I don't really know much of the techniques and such of pixelling portraits, so can't really confirm or help about it. :-\

@Dragon: I agree with Scuba Steve, and really think the portrait can be improved a great deal, so yea I also advise you start a thread in the pixelling section and hopefully an expert can help you with it.

@instant: In the portrait, her boobs are really pushed together for no noticable reason. Also, her right arm (hers!) looks way broken near the bottom, just as it gets to the forearm. It'd be cool if she had her eyes open, too. Everything else is pretty cool, though.

The full figure sprite looks really sharp however the portrait doesn't seem to match. The jaggy dark outline, the long face, the sleeves, everything looks different.  Try softening the edges, fixing the aforementioned boob issue and then spend some time focusing in on the face.

Didn't see a "board veterans only" tag in the description, so I thought I'd tag along. Nice break from what I usually do.

You sir, are awesome. I'm loving that.

Lol, cheeky.

Even so, Scuba Steve has probably lowered his attention to this quite alot, since it's not 2006 anymore and it's been a long time since any submissions. I'd wait until you've finished it before you go asking where he is and stuff.
