Mockup Frenzy #6: Musical Inspiration!

Resolution: 240x160
Colors: Up to 32
Theme: Games Inspired By Music
Start Day: November 16th, 2007
Deadline: November 30th, 2007
Notes:  This will be the last Mockup Frenzy of the year, as Secret Santa will be starting again very soon, so let's see some badass mockups!!  Your mockup should be inspired by a specific song this time.  I recommend pop songs as they will be the most familiar to a majority of the forum members, and therefore the most fun, but you are welcome to do classical, metal, jazz, whatever floats your boat.  Just find a song that inspires you and make your mockup based on that!  For example, the banner was inspired by Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt 2, and you can also check out Adarias's "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" mockup (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=3973.msg57682#msg57682) for more ideas.  Finally, there is no set palette for this, just use whatever colors you want!

Is this your first Mockup Frenzy?  Why not check out the rules & results from Mockup Frenzy #1: Mobility! (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=4765.0), Mockup Frenzy #2: Ninjas! (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=4913.0), Mockup Frenzy #3: GB Demakes! (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=5016.0), Mockup Frenzy #4: Invasion! (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=5116.0), and Mockup Frenzy #5: Horrorween! (http://www.pixelation.org/index.php?topic=5227.0)

RESULTS:

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Pt. 1). Very nice.

I really should enter this. Let's hope I have the time.

I wanna try and do one of these mockup challenges so i think i'm gunna give it a shot, since this is the last one this year n' all.
I picked this song by Incubus, A Certain Shade of Green, since it was fast paced and had something to do with a colour. Gave me the idea of a platformer in which you have a time limit to get to a certain destination, possibly a place which is a certain shade of green... i started picking out colours and they feel quite dreamy to me, so i think i wanna go with the concept you're being constricted by dream-like hinderances, such as the feeling of being pulled back with ropes as you run etc. ('Are your muscles bound by ropes', a line from the song). Not quite sure how it could be made more interesting though, rather than just keeping the right directional button pushed down. But hey, i don't need to go too far into it.  :y:

What i've gotten so far. Inspired by stuff i see around here i don't doubt.

The lamp would be massive, and the road leads down to the bottom of a canyon and where the lamp shines... >_>

You can listen to a clip of the song here (http://www.last.fm/music/Incubus/_/A+Certain+Shade+of+Green).

No more calling. Either participate or don't. Nobody's going to have the same idea you do, and even if they do, what's wrong with more than one interpretation?

HEH.

Posting WIP so I can pretend that I'm one of the first :]

Won't reveal song yet, that'd be boring = A=

Highlights in hair looking pretty sucky. Dangit.

Edit:

This is totally an update!

Now she has a power arm!

Actually, if I think about it, revealing the song can't hurt. O:

Baby Blue by Halcali (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sd1DuuNr448)

I kind of got inspired by the music, style, PV and the challenge banner :]

If you comment my taste in music you get banned. (Eh yeah. Eh. Secret agreement with moderators... Yeah. Promise.)

Lookin' good, Lar, but one little thing sticks out like a sore thumb: The light yellow you use while aaing between the green light and ground colors actually looks like it's lighter than the green. It could just be my monitor, but you might want to check it out.

I noticed this very clearly on the monitors at college, but it's much less obvious on my screen at home. I'll fix it though, so no worries. Thanks for the heads up.
In fact, a load of the colours in my mockup seem off using the computers at my college. I was pretty sure my monitor's calibrated properly.

Really cool locust.
Also nice edit Jad, but i don't think her robosuperarm is obvious enough, it took some time for me to realise what it was. Also, the panda isn't cute and fat and jiggly enough!  :yay:

Btw i absolutely loved the video.

so mine :

i'm trying a new kind of style (no cartoonish this time) with the music : voodoo people (the pendulum remix) made by The Prodigy.

so now it's just a wip...it's a sort of "press the button quckly" for speed and "press the good button" to dodging traps (with kind of arrows I think)

I will put later dead men with blood on the ground for exemple, a speed meter, an arrow to press, traps, etc...

Here's a WIP:
This is inspired by William Basinski's Disintegration Loops 2.1

I'm not sure whether I should shade the trees like the near-left one or keep them minimal like the near-right one. Or whether I should add more colours so that any shading would only be subtle. I was thinking of creating focal blur by leaving the nearer trees aliased and over-antialiasing the furthest trees.

Post by: Faktablad on November 21, 2007, 02:32:37 am
Ooh, finally some music I actually have on my computer!
I'd say shade all the trees minimally, like the one on the right.  Or at least AA them a little bit.  Also I'd say nay to focal blur, because it would harm the sort of "perpetual forest" vibe I get.  The sort of feeling that the forest is the same way, with the same trees, forever.  That perpetuality also matches the music, I think.

One thing I don't get is the sparseness of the trees.  How is the forest so dark when the trees aren't densely packed?  Also it seems like there are more trees in the foreground than in the background, which doesn't make sense if the trees are supposed to be evenly spaced.

Early WIP.
I've been wanting to both pixel something Machinae Supremacy related and use the C64 palette for ages, so I took this opportunity to marry the two.
Supposed to be MaSu's Masquerade (http://music.machinaesupremacy.com/machinae_supremacy-masquerade.mp3), but there's not much to indicate that yet (only the soldierish sprites are supposed to be wearing masks a la masquerade). Not really sure where it's going yet.
Using ptoing's C64 colours. Colours only, no other C64 technical restrictions.
I must say I quite like the colours. Certainly kicks the standard EGA palette's arse.

Is that path going vertical away from the central platform supposed to be of the same texture as that going off to the left? if so, I think the lines are much to compact on the former. Also, is that green stuff liquid? It doesn't really read as such. Awesome though.

Tried reworking north-south bridge and generic toxic slime stream. Still not really happy with the bridge, but it is correct for camera (half-length floor vertical). I might just take the easy way out and double the slab width.
The grey floor is looking quite monotonous and I've tried dithering in some subtle colour, but it just ends up looking noisy. Any tips would be appreciated.

Terley: Looks a bit too dark then I think.
Xion: Considered it, and might if I have too, but given the reasonably complex structure it'd be a lot of tiles.
AdamAtomic: Dither is the first thing I tried but given these colours I couldn't find a combo that was sufficiently low contrast and sufficiently ungarish.

Feature complete WIP.
Just got to decrappify it.

Is it readable enough without shadows or whatever else?

Concept
Action adventure puzzler.
Usurper seizes the planet's aristocracy during the Grand Masquerade Ball, enslaving all attendees with the enigmatic Masks.
Your enslavement doesn't go as planned, and you retain your will, but lose your self.
Taking advantage of your immunity from the enslaving power of the Masks you use each type of Mask's special abilities to fight the Usurper's enslaved minions and free your planet.
Wearing a Mask you take on that Mask's form and abilities, becoming non-threatening to slaves of that Mask type.
The Pearl Mask gives you the form of the Pearl Faces, the cannon fodder of the Mask slaves (allowing you to pass them without them attacking you).
On contact with a Shadow Mask you are transformed into a ethereal form that allows you to pass through obstacles, but you are unable to interact with your surroundings until you "remove" the Shadow Mask by touching a Shadow Mask again and return to your prior state (works like a slow teleport between Shadow Masks, and useful for reconnaissance).

As far as subtle dither goes all the lumapairs should go together nicely.

Basically the pairs with the same grey value should make for unintrusive ditherfills.

That's what I was looking at when I tried it.
Maybe it's my eyes, but none of them worked for me (intensity range, resultant colour).

EDIT:
Tried some simple overlaid short shadows. Don't much like them. But I'll call this done.

I think that is way too busy. With 16 colours and sprites that small you need to go more symbolic less texture and such, more colour separation and the likes.

These are all possible dithermixes with 50% combos, I think there are quite a few which are subtle enough.
