Title: Smile 2007 - Part 2
Post by: Panda on June 17, 2007, 08:15:48 am
So, here we are onto the last part of the smiley activity.
The winner entries that made it up to here are:

Junkboy's template
(http://i9.tinypic.com/6cqgnpi.png)

Lawrence's template
(http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/imagesv2/9844657514smilies.gif)

Snake's template (the tilted squares)

Now the task here would be to make the remaining smileys to complete the sets. Ideally, it would be neat having someone fixing the templates (the AA on snake's template, or perhaps polish Lawrence's a bit more, etc) before carrying on, but anyway leaving that aside, those participating should try to nail the style of the template they decide to work on as accurate as possible.
If there are multiple submissions for the same expression, only the ones that are more loyal to the original style and have more quality overall, will be included to the final set.
Feel free to contribute for the set you like the most, but they will be added for use only once we get all the smileys needed to qualify it as a complete set (so, uhm 42 or so smileys).
If you decide to make original smileys, (read as: expressions unexistant in the current smiley set) they will only be added if someone makes that same expression for all the other sets.

Ultimately, if anyone decides to make a full set of smileys (regardless of it being based on the winner entries or not, meaning you can make smileys with your own template or templates that were submitted in the first part of this activity) it will be considered for addition.
So if you are up to making one yourself (or with someone else, or whatever) go ahead.

Rules:

There will be no due date for this, but as mentioned, sets will only be added for use once they are complete.

So with all that down, feel free to start pixelling and all.
And have fun.

Disclaimer: By submitting smileys, you are agreeing and allowing Pixelation to use them as we might see appropiate. While we won't use the submissions for economical purposes (e.g. sell it), you shouldn't expect to be given credit whenever your smiley is used.

Here are my contributions.

Lesson: Never save in PNG when there's a mask you don't know about which magically deletes everything under it.

Post by: Helm on June 17, 2007, 10:40:40 am
I don't even know how that can happen, but data loss is always  :'(
Title: Re: Smile 2007 - Part 2
Post by: Arne on June 17, 2007, 10:59:26 am
I think the Programmers of the encoder/writer decided that, "Hey, isn't it a great idea if we like delete bitmap data under the mask, because it's like not showing anyways, and we can save space that way since blank data is easier to compress."

I don't think I'll be using PNG again as a general rule. Better safe than sorry. This loss of data does NOT show up on the preview when saving, like it does with jpg (artifact) or gif (color reduction).

Sorry for being OT. You can just pretend I posted 3x5 smileys there, or was it 4x4? Who knows.
Title: Re: Smile 2007 - Part 2
Post by: Helm on June 17, 2007, 11:03:29 am
I use png almost exclusively and I've never ever lost any data due to how it's programmed. Perhaps it's photoshop fucking up there, not the format?

Anyway, yes yes, OT.

And that's why you should always save your files in the native format of your program, and then export as GIF or PNG afterwards.

I am torn.
Regardless, I don't think other people should be editing the AA on Snake's set.
There's a subtle difference between creating new expressions and altering the existing ones, even if it is to do something so small as changing the AA.

Edit:
Made some more:

Edit 2:
Made more again:

The Yus one is waiting for Helm to play around with hues on.
I particularly like how the ? one turned out. Somehow I think the simplicity, and difference of it just works.

Post by: Muffin on June 17, 2007, 10:18:11 pm
Those are pretty awesome Faceless. But some things in your 2nd edit look funny to me. Like on the ? one, it's lacking inner AA on the mouth (I don't know if you call it that) and I highly dislike how his right eye gets cut off. For me it doesn't "just work". Also, on your Yus, it looks really off in the way everything is tilted. My last say is how the "wink" is. It looks more like he's grimacing or in pain not winking. Overall, the 1st set is better.

Owel. I had 5 minutes, so I attemted Larwick's. Would like to hear if the style is right.

Edit 1: Moustaches/Mustaches

Edit 2: Extremely Bad AA!

Just for fun:

mine are on the bottom.

I liked the mustache thingy, so i tried it out

more to come later perhaps!

@faceless - those are great, the emotions conveyed are very well done and detailed

@muffin - i disagree, the wink is fine. the yus isn't really off either, i think it's more squinty than that, though.
Title: Re: Smile 2007 - Part 2
Post by: Muffin on June 18, 2007, 02:02:28 am
Those are pretty sweet Alkaline! But your mustaches are much better than mine...

But about the yus smiley, I'm new to pixeling and would like to understand this.

The whole square tilts up to the right, yet it''s right eye goes down. And by looking at the Pixelation smile it looks off !yus!
Title: Re: Smile 2007 - Part 2
Post by: Faceless on June 18, 2007, 02:15:34 am
I guess you just don't understand the ? one.
The whole idea is that it looks unfinished and is on a different angle to the others.
I think that goes hand in hand with ? to be honest, but I'll do a more detailed one later.
On the Yus one, I was aware of the face being on the wrong angle, but I thought it fit the character.
I'll redo it using the old one as a reference.

Edit:
Done. It's a bit more detailed than the others, but I guess it'll do.

Thank you Faceless for the explanation. I am in agreement with you, of how I just didn't get the ? emote. It makes a lot more snse to me now. I also now understand the yus and it really doesn't bother me anymore. Thanks for the clarification.

I tried once again, to match alkaline's awesome set, but I think I failed...unlike alkaline's, unconsistent, and don't hold the style...

I don't get it muff. Why did you remake some of the ones that Alkaline already made?
I think some of yours look quite nice, but bare in mind the faces don't have to look like the ones we have atm.
You can be creative with the same expressiosn. For example, design your own glasses, and etc.

Umm... I only did the tongue one as another to choose from, even though his was better...And his second emote is pretty much completely different from mine...

I believe you are talking about my last 3 in the new edit. Although I did reference, mine were originally different,. That is, until my brother said if I made them look more like the current ones, that it would be much better.

I was more creative at the beginning but as I said before, my brother and I decided it would be a lot better if I made them more like the originals:

Hey Helmetudo, think you can post a good YUS ref pic for us to take the expression?

I really think we should give the YUS emoticon a beak, I think the way we have it now it just looks disgruntled, it isnt truly YUS :p

hey Faceless and Froli, I think you guys did some good stuff on the Snake emotes. truthfully though, I think you are using a bit too much detail and selout, it kinda drifts away from the essence of the template.....I've touched up every smile trying to improve it while keeping the essence...hope u guys like it c.c

I thought 6 was the best one. :P
I agree about the other two.

Conceit, I like some of what you did, but not as a whole.
I think we both based ours around different aspects of the set, each going in different directions, and who's to say which is better.
Yours are definitely less in keeping with the originals though. I guess I'll have to counter you with some new versions of yours. :P

haha, you're right I got carried away  ;D I just liked the rosy cheeks of the : ) emote so much I exagerated that into a completly new element of using the gradients and blushes to fill up the emote. and then I capitalized on your idea of faking angles by moving the face features to a side and it all went to crazyland :blind: hope they still get used tho  :P

I'm thinking of just doing a set of my own, hell....if I do that it'll surely get used anyways :p......AND I wont be stepping on your toes C_c

Fak those are awesome, the only one that doesn't read well is :  :'( , because there the blues in his face can't make out the tears.

I don't think any of them read well...
They read much better at 2x.

and I think its best to leave thumbs up and thumbs down not attached to a face so they're more versatile  :hehe: :y: - :yell: :y: -  :mean: :n: -  :D :n: etc

Feron: Thanks.  Actually there are no tears in that particular smiley...I decided they would be unnoticeable.

Faceless: They read pretty darn well for what I was trying to do: fit readable expressions onto a lifelike face within a 16x16 space.  Unfortunately I can't do much better without increasing the size, which I don't want to do, because I don't like the way large smileys break up text.

.TakaM: Gaah, jeez, you're right.  I'll try and work on that.

I think the purple ones read the best, and somehow fit the boards more.
The blue and green ones are hard to focus on (high sat. and all), and making the whole seeing-the-expression-at-a-first-glance rather tedious.

Oh also, anyone working on smiley sets, if you could put every smiley in individual images it'd make the adding thing way easier for us.

That's a real pretty set of smileys you got there, Faktablad. But I have to agree with Faceless that they're very hard to read. Especially at 1x, which is how they would be viewed on a board. Here's a quick suggestion how the readability could be improved a bit. I basically just changed the face detail color to pure black and made the details a bit bigger (without increasing the size of the squares).

Now I really want snake's tilted square-smileys to be the new standard. Only because of the dancing smilies. Of course, I demand that every single dancing one is implemented in the final version. Too good to resist. Animated smileys should NEVER be the standard, but included as a variety, it adds life to a lot of small expressions and the dancing smilies are absolutely adorable. You have no idea of how much 'retarded smiley wants to dance' would be used by me <3 <3 <3

(BTW Panda, the rolleyes one is shown twise in your post.) - Fixed, thanks - Panda

Seems people took a liking to the poor AA. I was just playing around, but I guess if you want to keep it that way, sure. I made these to fit that "style", but I can rework them with some better AA if people feel this is what they want. Some are still a bit WIP, but I wanted to show the general style I intended to use first. Some will of course be animated.

I guess the emotes are in a somewhat tricky angle to AA, and the palette (taken from the originals) isn't the best suited for it, but I gave it a shot:

The middle one is the closest I've got so far, but it might require some extra tinkering.

Got to say I love Junkboy's template made me have a quick go at a couple of animated ones.. maybe I'll get a chance to do a few others. Just thought I'd throw them into the mix in case they spark off any other ideas or whatnot. I think the crying works better than the head nod of approval but that's just my opinion.

X'D

I was on the floor laughing for at least five minutes. Literally. :y::lol:

Anyway, I have been counting on the mushroom smileys to win ever since the beginning. If we could have more of those animated, it would be a surefire win.

Not a useful contribution, but: (http://www.geocities.com/tidusrenewed/ball.gif)
This seemed like a good idea but when finished realised the "ball" was too small, 3x3 instead of 2x2 would have made a lot of difference.
[Edit] Also color red doesn't help.

Ok guys, this has been around for a while now, let's try and get this done. Snake's set seems to be the most finished one here and for now I guess one complete set will suffice. Only 14 more emotes to go in snake's version:

That's great, that makes only 8 left.

The last two are a bit too similar maybe. The left one should be less retarded and more naive/childlike imo.

Nice, we're getting there. A few crits for the new ones:

tocky:
I think you used an old base, because you're missing the new aa around the borders and the first one could do with some more internal smoothing as well.
Feel free to alter the colors of the second one a little more, to give more of a green tinge.
Here I think the expression would benefit greatly from single-pixel pupils, and white in the eyes to go along with the others stylewise
For the last one I have no real crits

cave:
I'm not sure if a whistling smiley even needs those pronounced inflated cheeks, most of the other smileys in this set seem to do without too elaborate shading.
Yeah, well, I can't really pick a favorite of the other.

Thanks for getting this done so fast now guys. I'll have a go at the thumbs up ones myself, if I manage to get my last homework assignment for now done today.

Ah, I see what happened. I swear I used the same squares as from snake's last post, so I think Photoshop musta stole aways some of my colours when I saved it. I'll see if I can fix it back.
