Title: Help with running animation
Post by: coldmage on April 12, 2017, 08:01:52 pm
I have been trying to make a running animation for a character, however, it seems to always end up looking like a gallop: (http://i.imgur.com/vVbLY5N.gif)
Any critique is appreciated.

You're not bobbing up when both legs are on the ground and you're emphasising the downbob too much!
Keep the legs in the air and on the ground the same number of frames as the other leg!
Think in arcs and circles, rather than straight lines!
Remember that the bob starts at the pelvis, not the head!
And finally, look at some video of people walking or running or sprinting to get a better feel for all of this!

Thanks for the advice Mystery Meat. I tried to keep the same number of leg frames, and changing the bob. Here's what I got:

Nope, still not working!
Bob up should happen every time a leg is mid swing

Here, a guide from google I post a lot:

Thanks for bearing with me. I remade using that(particular run cycle) as my reference.

Still got an uneven gait!
Erase it all and start over, we'll take it from the bottom up with the leg movements first. the style you're working with where everything's a square makes that much more doable.
Sucks to be that hardline but the uneven gait and bobbing is really killing it and it's gonna be more productive to start from that basic point.

I think that was to more show the bobbing since it is overall much more suited for a walk than a run. For a run animation, the legs and arms swing out a lot further and the overall motion is not as similar to a walk as one might think. I have exaggerated a bit in my edit to show. Also I played around with the timing a bit at this scale to give it a bit more character but that is up to you if you want that. You can also use other parts to convey the motion. I moved the body a bit, during frames of large movement. I could have bobbed the hair, extended the peaks of the run more etc. Hopefully you get the ideas.  :y:

I tried to restart from the ground up, and made a few iterations. Used some run animation references, and tried to incorporate some things from your edit yaoman17. Tried to make it smooth, but not smooth enough to be a walk cycle(instead of a run cycle).

The last two look most promising!

I put a top on the last two.

The top one reminds me of that spinning girl optical illusion. Like, you can make your mind make her turn in both directions. I feel the same with the top gif. His legs really merge together in a few middle frames that it feels like he's running backwards sometimes.

I suggest maybe making the legs more distinguishable by increasing the red? Maybe make one leg 'redder' than the other?
