Title: Pal hires works - what to do now?
Post by: Koyot1222 on May 25, 2016, 08:30:47 pm
I have made several pixelarts last time, but i have made also some hires pixel pictures. They are prepared for Amiga OCS view PAL hires-lanced 640x512 pixels, max 16 colours.

"Ambush"

"Seventh daughter"

and last one: "Silent dance"

Even if i have some ideas for new one... I have no clear idea where to go right now, how to evolve. I have many problems to chose wise palette of colours.
Any ideas, coments realy welcome.

Not sure if I can help you, but I have to say I really like your stuff! You have a very specific style to your pixel art.

Well done, imaginative designs :)

There's a problem with priority the way I see it. Apart from foreground/background separation everything seems to have pretty much the same amount of detail, color saturation, and contrast levels. Basically everything gets pushed to the front, competing with everything else for the viewer's attention with no clear indication of what you want us, the viewers, to focus on. There are two bad things that come out of that. One, the scene ends up looking rather flat. And two, it becomes noisy and straining to look at.

It's a good style, but maybe try to cut back on detail work for the areas that aren't so important? You can use colors and contrast to emphasize or mute different parts as well.

Just my 2c.

Sweet stuff.  :y:
These are very engaging and exploreable.
I like the busy and knotted feel.
It has a sort of Gestalt like effect --> without being tiny doods playing guitars

The characters don't do much acting.
Not always necessary, and there is a certain charm to static stoicism. --> Seventh Daughter being a good example where more expressive feelings are not really required.
But if you are looking for more to do, try to make your characters show how they feel within the context of the events in the image.

Here's some quick variations.

I don't know about this. It takes away the style of the originals.

I however love, that the artificial elements are made in all of these sharp pixel 45°/90° angles, while the organic beings in the picture are unbound by it, that with having unconstrained curves and such. Nice effect.

I also think the original version of the piece with the car worked better. However, I think recolouring some elements in the original could work well. Warmer foreground dirt, cooler background features. You wouldn't need to do a whole lot of work to make that piece be a lot less flat.

Very nice work. Getting a Syd Mead vibe here. Especially like the intricate shapes of the back of the car. Very 80's, in a good way.
I think you want to separate your foreground and background a bit more. Here is my attempt:

By the way, I just saw your process pic for the image. I think you had some really cool shapes for the buildings that got lost. They had a less flat design and a more emphasized volume, but they looked on point.

Some things that immediately come to mind on the airplane one:
-where are the missiles coming from? is it dodging them, or did it fire them?
-If the former, where's the indication that he's dodging?
-That background's kind of dull-looking, not a lot of visual interest, but I'm also assuming it's just a sketch layer for now while you clear up the plane.

Things I might have done if it were my work:
-Flip the background upside-down so it looks like the plane's mid-flip to create something neater to look at
-if it's supposed to be firing them, add some brackets under the wings and align the missiles and smoke better so they're coming from under the wings more clearly
-possibly add some kind of background fighting, like gun turrets, tanks, etc to get it looking bullet-hellish like air combat usually is
