Title: Trollin'
Post by: Decroded on February 19, 2015, 06:59:53 pm
some late night messing around  :P
(http://i.imgur.com/e62pfSu.png)

he WAS supposed to be a bad guy but now i think we could be friends  ???
might do some variations with some themes and weapons etc. but not many ideas right now.

font is 8px +dropshadow (because i can easily draw that via code) fixed width.
just i started the font here and i might extend to a full alphabet and use in my game (probably minus anti-aliasing) since i think its coming out OK so far.

His belly looks quite flat..  You got great depth going on the arms and legs, but the belly looks kinda pillow shady.
I love his pose, the way he's holding his right hand makes me feel like he's about to do some MJ dance moves.. (or maybe he was just scratching his head?)

yeah lol looks like he's moonwalking now u mention it  :P

yeah not too happy with the belly actually but it was pretty late and i was out of ideas  ???
i might have to revisit the belly and shoulder to maybe too so they don't look too different to the rest of it.

I made an edit, mostly to practice shading, not sure how consistent it is..

update (http://i.imgur.com/7KMlapY.png)

blatantly plagiarized some of Seiseki's ideas and some of my own.
added a new tooth and some more texture.
belly veins going too far??

Well, I didn't see Seiseki's edit and I already did one of my own so I might as well post it...

thx Nirel. funny how that tiny change to belly highlight completely changes the form  :)

spent some more time...

decided he needed a very simple background that didn't detract from the sprite.
in case its not obvious his finger is pointing at the text and the idea is "they see me trollin".
thought about softening the fall-off of the light on the wall but decided i kind of like the framing effect this hard edge gives.

process fyi...

i think im done with this but still interested if anyone sees anything needs fixing ::)

Made this edit yesterday but didn't really have time to post an explanation to what I did, so forgive me if some things have changed in your current version.

I'd suggest tuning down the black usage. Both the lightest and darkest colours should be used minimally to achieve a good balance with the shading (if you're using the troll for a game, that is, if it's going to be animated, keeping the outlines would make sense - to make him stand out).
For this reason I reduced the black usage just to vital areas where there's pretty much no light hitting that area, and made the darkest green lighter so it wouldn't be as close to the black (I also made the lightest colour lighter with a few other colours that I've changed)
Additionally I've added some reflections here and there, which again, if used for a game would probably not work very well.

There are two reasons for the abdomen's flat look:
1). the highlight
2.) the shading
The highlight implies that it's at an angle (being placed so far up next to the breast), which is amplified by the fact you didn't make gradual shading to lead up to that point, it implies that the whole green part of the abdomen is a flat surface.

note that I didn't edit the leg and several other areas, but hopefully this can still help you in some way.

Since I was a little late to the party before I thought I'd Just try to move things around a bit and see what happens.

nice dude  :y:
next level.
that realistic style wouldnt fit in with the game's ary but regardless I'll absorb as much of this as I can and incorporating into the cartoony style.
especially ur handling of anatomy, skin, bones...lots to absorb here ;D
